Womenswear designer Sergio Hudson takes us back to the 80s with his new contribution to NYFW. The Seasonless 10 Collection is Hudson’s latest addition to its ever-growing catalog, maintaining its use of vibrant, eye-catching colors and patterns. New to this collection, however, is the inspiration: Prince and The New Power Generation. With neatly teased hair and dark makeup, the Hudson models were ready to “party like it’s 1999.”

Hudson, who launched his career from Bravo’s rock style, has his creations presented everywhere. From designing Beyoncé’s London blazer dress to Michelle Obama’s 2021 Inauguration burgundy pants and belt, Hudson’s impact can be seen and heard. Like those iconic burgundy pants, Hudson returns to NYFW with bold, eye-catching colors.

The collection includes a variety of color-blocking garments, from cocktail dresses to suits, each with eye-catching stiff structures. Note the way Hudson layers these colors, frequently using strict blocking to mimic the shape of the garment itself.

Opposite these bright colors is the other part of the Hudson collection, built entirely in black and white. These looks ranged from shawl-collared coats to full evening dresses, some mixing the two hues while others kept austere monochromatic palettes. With severe cuts and blocking, these garments often create a form of optical illusion.

Hudson’s affinity for animal prints, both in color and black and white, runs throughout the collection. Hudson offers a variety of cheetah-print clothing, ranging from a flowing belted suit to a draped mini dress. The star of the collection comes as an all black and white abstract animal print dress with hand beaded embellishments. The look is eye-catching and modern, but not overly forgiving bawdy.

The 10 collection marks a strong addition to Sergio Hudson’s repertoire, leaning even further into the maximalism and power of his garments. You can’t help but stare. Yet the clothes maintain Hudson’s mission to empower the women who wear his clothes and make them feel sexy. The collection may be retro and grand, but it’s never overdone. No, Sergio Hudson keeps his mission well: stay clean, stay modern.
