Police warn of high-risk sex offender living in Halifax area


Halifax Regional Police are advising the public that a high risk offender is now living in the community.

In a statement, police say Michael Gary Gilbert, 51, has served time for multiple sex crimes and are notifying the public in accordance with the release of a New York High-Risk Offender Information Protocol. -Scotland.

Gilbert, who is originally from New Brunswick, had been imprisoned for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual interference with a person under the age of 14, printing or publishing child pornography, possession of child pornography, printing or distributing obscene material and possession of a Schedule II substance.

Halifax Regional Police said Gilbert is held to strict conditions, including:

  • Not have contact with anyone under the age of 16, except under the supervision of a person whom the court deems appropriate;
  • Not engage in any activity, employment or voluntary work that involves being in a position of trust or authority over anyone under the age of 16;
  • Not to use a computer system for the purpose of communicating with anyone under the age of 16;
  • Do not frequent a public park, public swimming area, daycare center, schoolyard or community center “where children under the age of 16 could reasonably be expected to be present”.

“This information is provided to alert members of the public to its presence in our community and is not intended to encourage any form of vigilante activity or other unreasonable conduct,” the statement read.

Gilbert was arrested in January 2009 when police raided his home in Tracyville, New Brunswick, after he was identified in child pornography found on a computer seized in Brazil.

In 2011, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but it was reduced to 10 years and eight months with the sentence served.

In all, six boys between the ages of four and 16 were his victims. He had taken around 17,000 sexually explicit images of the young boys and around 500 videos.
