Almost two years after, uh, gifting the world a celebrity-studded version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Gal Gadot has doubts.

The “Wonder Woman” actor is featured for the February issue of InStyle and, in the accompanying interview, discusses the backlash she received in 2020 after the video which featured appearances by Amy Adams. , Zoë Kravitz, James Marsden, Mark Ruffalo and other stars went viral.

While Gadot was hoping “Imagine” would comfort fans as COVID-19 sent much of the world to lockdown, the video received a frosty reception from critics. “Peak cringe,” NBC News proclaimed, while The New York Times called it “a hollow and deeply embarrassing gesture.” Many people on social media have suggested that the participating stars could have better served those suffering from the effects of the pandemic through donations or other charitable acts.

In her conversation with InStyle, Gadot said she now understands why “Imagine” didn’t land as planned.

“The pandemic was in Europe and Israel before coming here [to the U.S.] in the same way, ”she explained. “I could see where everything was going. Corn [the video] was premature. Now was not the right time, and it was not the right thing. It was in bad taste.

The Israeli actor previously made fun of the video during an appearance at the Elle 2021 Women in Hollywood gala last fall. Footage from the event, which took place in October, showed the actor playfully humming a few bars of “Imagine” as he took the stage, eliciting laughs from the crowd.

Reflecting on the appearance, Gadot said she hoped the semi-impromptu musical moment would prove that she wasn’t hung up on controversy.

“It was fair, and I don’t take myself too seriously,” she said. “All with pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the nail on the head, do you?” I felt like I wanted to get the air out of it, so that [event] It was a wonderful opportunity to do so.

Elsewhere in the interview, Gadot discusses his upcoming projects, including “Wonder Woman 3” and her highly anticipated Cleopatra biopic.

The life story of the Queen of the Nile has appeared on the big screen several times, most notably in 1963, when it was controversially interpreted by Elizabeth Taylor. Still, Gadot told InStyle that the new film would be especially suited to modern audiences.

“We’re going to show not only how sexy and attractive she was, but also how strategic and intelligent she was, and what impact she had and still has on the world we live in today,” he said. she declared. “I’ve watched every Cleopatra movie throughout history, but I feel like we’re telling the story the world needs to hear now.”
