Feel like summer once again

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Rain showers and thunderstorms were great yesterday (maybe not so much wind, but we’ll take the rain!) Some places got an inch of heavy rain. These days we could use more, but it was a nice way to end a hot, dry week. The next few days will be very hot and dry with temperatures close to 100º until Tuesday. A cold front on Wednesday will change that bringing cooler air and even another chance of rain. For reference, the records in Topeka for Sunday through Thursday are 101, 97, 98, 98, 99.

To take part:

  1. Get ready for the summer heat from Sunday to Wednesday. Heat indices will be around 100-104 for maximum temperatures in northeast Kansas. Make sure you are prepared and adjust your outdoor activities accordingly. Also consider your pets.
  2. Wednesday will bring a strong cold front with a big chill that will last through next weekend and a chance of rain Wednesday night and Friday. Both odds are low but still in development, so check back for updates.

Today: Warm and sunny. Highs in the upper 90s. S winds blowing 10 to 15 mph, gusting to 25 mph.

This evening: Generally clear. Lows in the lower mid 70s. Winds S around 10 mph.

Tomorrow: Sunny and warm, potential daily record heat. Highs in the upper 90s near 100º. SW winds blowing 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny and warm, potential daily record heat. Maximum near 100º. S winds blowing 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 30 mph.

Overnight low temperatures for the next few days will be warm for mid-September and will only drop to the mid-70s through Tuesday evening. As mentioned, daytime temperatures will be at or above record highs in Topeka and other areas through Tuesday, so hopefully get ready for one last hit of summer when it comes out. Fall officially begins this Thursday at 8:03 p.m.

Wednesday has a few possibilities. The latest data continues to be split on the timing of a cold front, with one suggesting Wednesday afternoon and another suggesting not before Thursday. For now we have opted to go with the earlier timing which means some will see the 70s and 80s highs on Wednesday while further south would still be in the 90s through Thursday. Be aware that the timing on this could change later on Wednesday or even Thursday.

Along with the front there is also a chance of rain showers from Wednesday evening through Thursday and another chance of showers on Friday. The better of the two chances seems to be Wednesday evening. Then it looks like we’re saying goodbye to the heat for a while (maybe a long time?) with the temperature remaining in the 70s and 80s until next weekend after Wednesday.
